Update Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000 by installing the AOKP ICS Android 4.0 Firmware

The ICS Android 4.0 OS update for the Galaxy Tab P1000 has just been released and it’s available for download. But, in order to safely apply this upgrade you must first know what tools to use. Also, if you don’t want to damage your device, you should follow a step by step guide, which will ease your work. As you can already tell, this is the purpose of the present tutorial, so give it a try and see if you can handle it.
During the following, you can learn the safest and quickest method in which you can install the AOKP ICS Android 4.0 firmware on your Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000. I recommend you to read all the lines and do all as explained, or else you can wreck your tablet. I’ve explained the benefits and also the negative aspects that come along with this update, so you can make a proper idea before deciding what to do.
First of all, the Ice Cream Sandwich firmware will power up the performances of the Galaxy Tab. I know that since 2010, when it was first released on the market, many other high end tablets were developed, so you might consider your device a little bit outdated; that’s why you must apply this OS update. After completing this operation, you will be able to customize and optimize the system, improve the battery life, personalize the looks and improve the speeds. The features added are many, but I bet you know them by far.
The Galaxy Tab P1000 specs are including a 1 GHz Cortex-A8 processor, 512 MB RAM, a 3.15 MP rear facing camera along with a 1.3 MP front facing one and a 7 inch TFT capacitive touchscreen. Don’t forget the operating system, which now is Android with its 2.3 Gingerbread version. A mid-range tablet indeed, but don’t be discouraged; install the ICS update and give your tablet a new chance.
You must take in consider that the present upgrade isn’t coming from Samsung, being developed by the AOKP (Android Open KANG Project), so we have them to thank for this. Unfortunately, Samsung decided (so far) to stay “stingy” when it comes to the official Android 4.0 firmware for its Galaxy Tab, so the AOKP version is all you get. Anyway, we will update you with news as soon as something else is being announced.
Also, another negative aspect is referring to the warranty. Applying the update will make you void the Samsung warranty; if something goes wrong, or if the tablet gets damaged (it happens extremely rarely and only if you don’t follow a proper tutorial) then you will be on your own. If you are feeling uncomfortable about this, maybe it will be better to stop here. Furthermore, there are some things you must prepare on your computer (you need to have access to a Windows / Linux / MAC PC) and on your PC. Just read the following:
  • First, you can’t install the AOKP ICS Android 4.0 firmware if you don’t have a rooted Galaxy Tab P1000.
  • The present tutorial will NOT work for the models P1000 L/ N / CDMA / P1010 and Wi Fi only versions of the Galaxy Tab. Don’t install the update on the up mentioned devices as you might wreck them.
  • You must have minimum 3 GB of free space on your tablet.
  • Check the battery power. There should be at least 70% (80% recommended) power left, if not charge the device first.
  • Enable the USB debugging in your tablet. For completing this,  go to “Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging”.
  • Backup the data from your tablet before starting the basic procedure. In this way you can avoid loosing your info, messages, or even apps.

How to update Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000 with AOKP ICS Android 4.0 Firmware

Preparing the tablet

  1. At the first step you need to download the proper tools; get the “Overcome_7_Series_v4.1.0_NoWipe.zip” Package from here and place it to the computer.
  2. Connect the tablet with the PC by using the USB cord.
  3. Copy the file downloaded in step 1 from the computer to your Galaxy Tab.
  4. Disconnect the device from the PC by removing the USB cable.
  5. Reboot it by entering in the recovery mode. This can be achieved by pressing the volume down button and then switch ON the device.
  6. In the recovery mode menu choose “choose zip from internal SD Card”; the file should be just there (where you place it on step 3), just pick it.
  7. Then, select “+++go back+++” followed by “reboot system now”.
  8. Proceed to the next section.

Applying the update

  1. Again you must download the proper tools. Get the Stock Safe Package (from here), Overcome Kernel (here) and Overcome 7 Series ROM 4.1.1 Wipe Edition Package (here) and place them to the PC.
  2. Extract the “001001-GB-Stock-Safe-v5.zip” file to any folder of your choice.
  3. Turn off the Galaxy Tab.
  4. Reboot it by entering in download mode. This can be achieved by pressing the volume down button and then switch ON the device.
  5. Open the extracted folder and then open the Odin 3 v1.7 executable file.
  6. Connect the tablet with the computer.
  7. Once connected, you should see that the “ID : COM” section, from Odin, will turn yellow.
  8. In Odin select “PIT”, “PDA” and “Phone” and select the files displayed on each option. Note: if you are using an AT&T, Testra or TelCel device you should look for the “JK3 Modem” folder and select the “modem.bin” file.
  9. Then, click on “Start”.
  10. When the process is done the tablet will reboot on its own.
  11. You can disconnect it from the computer as we are done.
